Who's In Charge Of This Thing?
John Robison created the Roving Imp Theater in 2007 on a foundation of over 20 years of acting and directing scripted theater. He currently directs and performs with the Roving Imp ensembles and teaches classes in improvisational acting from beginning to advanced levels. John is highly sought out as an improv clinician and coach, and is one of the best qualified directors in the Kansas City area. He has coached the Emporia State University team Zoiks! (regional winners of the College Improv Championships) and coached first-place winning team Generation Gap for Improv Thunderdome. He's given workshops for the Kansas City Improv Festival, the Roving Imp Tiny Group Fest, and the Kansas Improv Festival (formerly Roving ImpFest), as well as programs at over 20 churches, libraries and schools all over northeast Kansas and northwest Missouri.
John is part of several successful two-person shows: the highly acclaimed Dictionary Soup, Biblioclast, TrivProv, Robison & Co., and Special Guest Star.
In the past he has performed with Improv-Abilities, Full Frontal Comedy, Babelfish, Slow Pitch, Makeshift Militia, and the Hypothetical 7. He also performed at the 2008, 2009 and 2010 Chicago Improv Festivals, the 2008, 2009 and 2010 Kansas City Improv Festivals, the 2010 & 2011 DuoFest in Philadelphia, the 2011 Colorado Improv Festival, the 2009 and 2010 Improv Festival of Kansas, the 2011 SnubFest in Chicago, and the 2011 Roving Imp Tiny Group Festival. Coming up in the next couple months, he's slated to perform at the 2011 Kansas City Improv Festival and the 2011 Improvathon in Chicago.
John received his improv training at the world-famous i.o. (Improv Olympic) in Chicago, and has taken classes from the Second City Touring Company of Chicago as well as current improv superstars all over the country. He was founder and artistic director of the Better Than Fair Players from 1995-2003. He is also an accomplished writer, having written three original plays as well as adaptations of stories by Mark Twain and Dr. Seuss and an ABBA tribute musical.
